Protecting Your Lungs

Apart from our brain and heart, our lungs are the main organ that is keeping us alive and well. Protecting your lungs is critical. It is of utmost importance to prioritise your lung health.

Though your body has a natural defence system to protect your lungs, there are some important things that you can do to reduce your risk of lung disease. Follow these tips to keep your lungs as healthy as possible.

Don’t Smoke

Cigarette smoking is one of the major causes lung cancer and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Cigarette smoke has been proven to narrow the air passages and make breathing more difficult. It also causes chronic inflammation or swelling in the lung, which can lead to chronic bronchitis. Cigarette smoke also destroys healthy lung tissue over time and may trigger changes that mutate into cancer. Always remember, if you do smoke, it is never too late to benefit from quitting.

Avoid Long-Term Exposure to Pollutants

There are a multitude of pollutants around us that can cause or worsen lung disease. Examples of these pollutants are secondhand smoke, chemicals in the home, air pollution, and radon. All of these can be considered dangerous to your lung health.

Prevent Infection

Any respiratory infection or even a cold has the chance to become a serious health issue. There are several things you can do to protect yourself:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. Alcohol-based cleaners are a good substitute if you cannot wash.
  • Avoid crowds during the cold and flu season.
  • Good oral hygiene can protect you from the germs in your mouth leading to infections. Brush your teeth at least twice daily and see your dentist at least every six months.
  • Get vaccinated every year against influenza. Talk to your healthcare provider to find out if the pneumonia vaccine is right for you.
  • If you get sick, keep it to yourself! Protect the people around you, including your loved ones, by keeping your distance. Stay home from work or school until you’re feeling better.

Get Regular Healthcare

Regular check-ups are the first line of defence against any sort of disease. Even if you are feeling well you should be going for routine check-ups.

Exercise

Aerobic exercise has been proven to help improve your lung capacity. There are also specific breathing exercises that can contribute to both lung health and function.
