MIAMI (CBSMiami), – While the conflict in Ukraine might seem distant South Floridians continue help those seeking refuge.

Many people from the Sunny Isles Jewish communities are currently raising funds and helping in coordinating a massive humanitarian effort.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Marsha Jaquays from Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital reported that 1,100 patients visited the other night.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Emmanuil Grinshpun She said that there are over 2 million Ukrainian refugees seeking to escape their war-torn homeland. Many of them have crossed the frontier to Moldova the country of a few thousand which shares a border with Ukraine.

Jaquays said, “From Moldova this Jewish community is actually helping to help them cross the border and then possibly providing food, shelter and clothing.”

The center of most of the humanitarian work can be found in South Florida.

“My job is to mobilize all resources available from the American society to help with this situation in Moldova.” Emmanuil Grinshpun helps coordinate the effort to help those in need said, “We have a full staff on the ground to help organize camps, buy food, set up buses, and arrange all the facilities.”

Emmanuil Grinshpun What makes this situation more tragic is the fact that Moldova is believed to be among the least developed communities around the globe. However people who are involved in this cause affirm that they will not allow anything hinder them from helping.

Grinshpun said, “When brothers and sister from Ukraine arrived, we didn’t need to think. We just began to do it.”

    Jaquays echo the sentiments.

“Who were there in the Holocaust and also when the Nazis were victorious? What number of people did you choose to turn away and claim that it was me I’m not you. It’s not me. Jewish. It’s my community. I’m not in Europe. We don’t have to make the same mistakes that history has made. There’s an old saying: “If it’s not now the time, who will it be?” twitter.com/mopeng/status/1311120272200577024 If not me, who?

Emmanuil Grinshpun The organization says they are also hosting several events locally in hopes to raise awareness and aid the Ukraine refugees. Sunny Isles will host its next event on the 24th of March. Click Here for details
