Lung Cancer Claims Ponggol Seafood Founder

Ponggol Seafood founder, Mr Ting Choon Teng, passed away at the age of 90 after a battle with lung cancer. Mr Ting opened the iconic Singaporean restaurant in 1969. At that point, it was known as Ponggol Hock Kee Seafood Restaurant.

Mr Ting started his restaurateur career after working as a foreman at a sauce factory. It was there that he began experimenting with sauces and perfecting his recipes for iconic dishes such as chilli crab and mee goreng.

The main attraction of the restaurant was that after 47 years of business, the taste of food never changed. Mr Ting initially opened Ponggol Seafood just to support his family, but the restaurant gained popularity fast and they soon expanded operations.

It is commonly said that the restaurant grew with Singapore. They faced and overcame the same trials and tribulations.

The operations of the restaurant will now be the responsibility of the next generation of Tings.
